An abstract " The GSM/EDGE standard is taking steps to fully define a fully capable 3G mobile radio access network.The 3GPP Release 5 will specify a GSM/EDGE radio access network (GERAN)which can connect to a 3G mobile core network through the lu interface and is capable of offering the set of services - conversational , streaming , interactive and background as the Universal Terrestial Radio Access Network (UTRAN). "The Iu interface is common between UTRAN and GERAN . The Iu interface is specified at the boundary between the Core Network(CN) and the radio access network (RAN).
The Iu interface towards the PS domain of the core network is called the Iu-PS and the Iu interface towards the CS domain is called the Iu-CS."
